Have you noticed the new ads for Activia? I've written about this stuff before , pointing out that their claims about "bifidus regularis" in no way mean that theirs is the only yogurt that has a beneficial effect on digestion, or even that theirs is the only yogurt that contains that particular strain of bifidobacteria.

What's bemusing me now is the fact that they've gone from stating that one serving per day of Activia will help regulate your digestive system, to telling us that it takes three servings per day. Three! That's a whole lot of yogurt.

Going by the nutrition info on Activia Strawberry, that's 360 calories per day of yogurt -- and 66 grams of carb, 57 of 'em from pure sugar. Furthermore, for all that sugar you'll only get 4 grams of protein per serving, or 12 grams for the day.

The question on my mind, though, is why? Why this sudden change in advertising strategy? Is it just because they think that they can get everyone to think that it's a typical, reasonable thing to do to eat three servings of highly processed yogurt per day, and therefore make triple the money they were making with their one-a-day advertising strategy?

Or is there something more behind it? You may have noticed that the ads for DanActive, which was being flogged as improving your immune system, went away some time ago. That's because they got busted for making unsubstantiated claims. So now I'm wondering if Dannon got a little love note from the government, asking for some proof of their claims, and research demonstrated you need considerably more yogurt than they said to make a difference?

I don't know. I just find it interesting, that's all. And I reiterate my assertion that any good plain yogurt with a nice broad range of bacteria will give you all the benefits yogurt can give, without all the sugar that's in Activia.

Another thing that is very sketchy with yogurt claiming they have probiotic benefits is that when they pasteurize it they kill off most of the beneficial bacteria!

We Make Our Own Probiotic Yogurt

We add acidophilus and probiotic complex capsules (from www.swansonvitamins.com) to a half-gallon of milk (after the kids drink the first half of the gallon!), swish it around a few times and set it on the top of the refrigerator for 48 hours to make a thick, tart yogurt that we then drink by the glass or blend into smoothies. There is no way to know exactly how much -- and what kinds -- of the probiotics make it through our digestive tract, but the tartness should indicate it is low in residual sugar. It tastes good and is cheap! The grandmother who introduced the practice to me via a homemaking class at Church also indicated her 3-generation household had missed no work or school due to illness in the year since they had all been consuming at least one glass per day of her homemade probiotic (and she uses rehydrated, non-instant milk and only lets it culture on her countertop for 24 hours).

I do love my plain yogurt

Full fat Brown Cow with the cream on the top, Yum yum. I sometimes mix in a packet of splenda with a bit of vanilla. Or some mashed up berries go really good too.

You can just take a probiotic pill. Long ago, a doctor advised me that there wasn't nearly enough bio in yogurt to do any good and told me to take lactinex while I was on antibiotics.

Yes, Dannon got spanked! A year ago! Can it really have taken them that long to revamp the campaign and change the ads? I admit that I pretty much tune out any commercial, but I've noticed the change in these ads.

I tried Activia a year or more ago, and have to admit I didn't like it. It was way too sweet. And the portion sizes seemed small, compared to other, cheaper, yogurts. I decided after my trial run that I'd stick with a plain yogurt. Given the tripling of the required daily intake and my change in eating style, I'll be foregoing the Activia.

Right now I'm eating the Kroger low carb yogurts. They have 4 grams useable carb per container and come in various flavors.

I notice they've revamped the recipe - they're now lower in fat and not as rich. Sigh. Won't these companies ever learn? It's just not as good!
