The Search For The Elusive Golden Flake

You may recall that last winter, after the Low Carb Cruise, I wrote about the snacks I'd encountered in Dixie, and my newfound addiction to Golden Flake Pork Cracklin's. Well, I'm now in Gainesville, Florida, blogging from a Super 8 motel, having gotten off the Carnival Fascination yesterday in Jacksonville. The cruise was fantastic, but I'll blog about that later. Right now my obsession is this:

I CAN'T FIND ANY GOLDEN FLAKE CRACKLIN'S! AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!

Jimmy Moore brought me a couple-dozen bags last summer, when he and Christine came to visit, and I made them last a few months, but they've been gone for quite a while now. I have called the Golden Flake factory to inquire, and there is no place they are sold in Indiana. So I've been planning for months now to stock up on Golden Flake -- the sweet, sweet,(metaphorically, that is) tasty, crunchy, porky, no-carb Golden Flake -- while I was south of the Mason-Dixon. (I could order them from the factory, and I may have to do that, but with shipping it's over $100/case. I figured if I bought 'em down here and drove 'em home myself I could afford a whole lot more of them.)

I have been to truck stops, convenience stores, gas stations, WalMarts, a Target, a Publix. I've found other cracklin's, and tried some other brands. They're okay, and certainly make for good motel room emergency fodder. But no Golden Flake! I cannot find the Golden Flake! I NEED THE GOLDEN FLAKE!

So last night I emailed the factory, told them I was in Gainesville, headed for Lillian, AL, and asked them to tip me off as to where I could find the manna I crave. I only hope they write me back.

Otherwise, I'm going to be dragging That Nice Boy I Married into a bunch more stores. Thank heaven he's a patient man.

Golden Flake. I must have the Golden Flake...

New Book?!

Hi Dana. I can't wait to hear about the cruise, and I certainly hope you hit the jackpot regarding the Golden Flakes!

I saw a reference on another site to a new cookbook of yours and thought how silly, I would certainly know if Dana had a new book out of any kind. Well I checked out my local bookstore just to be sure and low and behold it was there! 1001 Recipes this time! I'm not sure why you didn't promote it on the blog or at Carbsmart maybe, because it is fabulous. I know it is mostly (all?) the favorites from your other books (which I have every one of) but having the favorites all in one place and in a new format has already encouraged me to try several new ones that I've loved and be reminded of old favorites. It was certainly worth the price for that reason, and to support someone who does so much for the low carb community and stands up for nutritional honesty in a dark era for the human body. Thanks for heeding the call of this work, and especially for the new book! I'm so happy with it!

Wait till you get to Alabama

Hey Dana,

I'm not surprised you can't find golden flake, I've long been of the opinion that Florida is pretty much not truly southern. Don't panic, once you get to Baldwin County you should definitely find Golden Flake everywhere. If you end up going up 65, almost every gas station in Greenville will have them. You can also get a nice salad with turkey on it from Bates House of Turkey.

I went to high school not far from Lillian in Fairhope. It cracks me up to hear about someone craving Golden Flake. They are good. Luckily I live in Birmingham and they're everywhere here.

Good Luck!

Become a seller?

Get a group together to split it? Then you could ship some to me in Washington State :)

It looks like Walmart (in select locations) carries that brand.
